I feel that students learn better and achieve their full potential in safe and
orderly classrooms. It is always a worry and a factor of how to make
schools safer. Some of us argue for metal detectors, added security
personnel and zero-tolerance for weapon possession. Other favor solutions
that include more counseling, conflict resolution programs, and better
communications between school and home. I feel the solution will take a
combination of both approaches to keep our children from harm.
Some strategies we can use to help increase school safety is to reduce
and eliminate bullying and harassment. Expand access to counseling
and provide ways for students to communicate with adults about rumors
and threats. I think these strategies are some of the best ways of dealing
with school safety. Bullying is punching, shoving and other acts that hurt
people physically. Also bullying can be spreading bad rumors about people
or keeping certain people out of a groups. Any of these situations could be
considered bullying. Bullying and harassment directly interfere with
student learning and achievement, just as they threaten the safety and
well being of millions of students each year. Some other problems
students might face in school is eating disorders, self injury, and Internet
surfing. I feel that if we all work together to make a difference we can
make school safety better.
