School Safety

I feel that students learn better and achieve their full potential in safe and
orderly classrooms. It is always a worry and a factor of how to make
schools safer. Some of us argue for metal detectors, added security
personnel and zero-tolerance for weapon possession. Other favor solutions
that include more counseling, conflict resolution programs, and better
communications between school and home. I feel the solution will take a
combination of both approaches to keep our children from harm.
Some strategies we can use to help increase school safety is to reduce
and eliminate bullying and harassment. Expand access to counseling
and provide ways for students to communicate with adults about rumors
and threats. I think these strategies are some of the best ways of dealing
with school safety. Bullying is punching, shoving and other acts that hurt
people physically. Also bullying can be spreading bad rumors about people
or keeping certain people out of a groups. Any of these situations could be
considered bullying. Bullying and harassment directly interfere with
student learning and achievement, just as they threaten the safety and
well being of millions of students each year. Some other problems
students might face in school is eating disorders, self injury, and Internet
surfing. I feel that if we all work together to make a difference we can
make school safety better.

School safety is a very important issue. I feel that counseling services should be advertised more than what they are in schools. Some children are more apt to tell a counselor something than what they would a family member. I feel so sorry for children that are picked on. This is an issue that should be fixed as soon as it becomes a problem.

I agree, I think that all of these methods could potentially help make schools safer. Differen't things work for different people. If all of these things were offered that would be nice but unfortunatley we do not live in a perfect world with all the resources to implement these things.

I think that a lot of adjustments need to be made when it comes to school safety. Some students come to school to be safe. They actually feel safer at school than at home. I wish that I could make every child safe, but I can't. As a teacher, I can push for better safety in schools and I will.

I believe that all students should take a small course about bullying and harassment and what it does to others. If they break the rules on it after the course, then they should be dealt with appropiately, and the students who are being bullied, should be encouraged to report the harassment without fear of more harassment. I almost got suspended from my highschool because I told a teacher another student said they wanted to kill a teacher. I WAS THE ONE IN TROUBLE FOR REPORTING IT! Is this right? No, and I think that's how situations get out of hand to begin with.

I like the idea of counseling, but students would have to feel safe and comfortable enough to go talk to the counselor. I know when I was in high school if you went to the dean to talk about someone starting rumors or something about you they would tell you that they couldn't do anything about it unless that person had put their hands on you. I think that as educators we need to change the way this is handled. If a rumor or disagreement escalates to the point of a physical altercation, then I would personally feel that I had failed that child. We need to work on not letting it get to that point.

I agree that school safety is important. More and more schools are taking more security measures such as cameras, metal detectors, etc. I agree that counseling services need to be advertised more because some students may not know that they are available.

I feel that in order to keep schools safe the school and local police need to work together in keeping the school secure as possible.

I think that school safety is very important. We need to be insured that our children are going to be safe when we put them in someone else's hands. Something needs to be done.

I think that in todays world we need all the security we can get. I also agree that we all need to be aware of the bullying problems our children face. These students, both the innocent and the guilty need help and we are the ones to provide it for them.

First I think school safety should start at the door. I work as a sub-aide and I have walked in and walked around school's in the mornings not ever being in that school before and nobody ask me who I am or what I am doing there. It is scary that my kids go to school in schools that this kind of thing happens in.
